Update #5 - How the BVOY Travel Journal Was Born
In our first update we promised we would share the story of how our brand BVOY & Co. and the BVOY Travel Journal came to be. It was just over a year ago in October 2016 that we took a trip together to California. We had a goal in mind to use this trip as time away to think about what our creative project would be for 2017. We knew we wanted to work on something outside of work that we were passionate about and that was personally meaningful. We started off in San Francisco, rented a car, and took a road trip all the way to Los Angeles with stops along the way.
As we travelled we pushed ourselves to be more conscious and absorb the moment during our journey. Our different stops, experiences talking to people, and beautiful views definitely sparked new perspectives as well. We also found ourselves reflecting on our actions throughout the trip with each other.
We knew an idea wouldn’t simply just come to us, so we tried different brainstorming activities along the way to spark new ideas. As we drove, one thing we tried was having the person in the passenger seat read interesting business or startup articles that we would then discuss in hopes that it may spark some ideas for our project. After a couple attempts and no ideas we decided to try something else.
We then spent one night in our Monterey Airbnb writing on colourful pieces of paper. On some we wrote different problems that people have, and on others we wrote different client trends in the market. As we continued driving through California we would try and pair trends with problems and brainstorm ideas that would help solve those problems. After a couple attempts at this brainstorming activity the idea for a guided travel journal was born! One of the problems we wrote was: “people travelling in hopes of being inspired/figuring out their passion but not finding it”. Looking back on the trends we identified, we actually had several that related to this project:
- “people are thinking more deeply about being a better version of themselves and psychoanalyze themselves compared to previous generations”
- “off the beaten path traveling - people want to experience an adventure and something new. Experience local and know a new culture for life inspiration. Get a deeper experience. People searching for authenticity and tourist attractions aren't authentic enough”
We believed that a travel journal that guided travellers thoughts and intentions before, during, and after their trip would help to solve this problem and meet the needs of many travellers.
We remember sitting in a coffee shop on a very rainy day in Costa Mesa, continuing to brainstorm ways to bring our project to life and excited about what we wanted to accomplish when we returned home. For the first time we weren’t scared to go back home to face reality and fall back into our normal routine. We returned home and continued the momentum from the trip and brainstormed what our brand name would be. We had an exercise for that too! We each brainstormed different travel words and inspirational words and tried to merge words together to come up with a brand name. The idea of being a “better version of yourself” was always in the back of our mind and we eventually landed on making an acronym for it: BVOY!
Now that we look back on our trip, we realize that we essentially went through the main components of our journal without even knowing it at the time! We had in mind what a better version of ourselves looked like, we had a travel focus, we tried different things to follow through on it, and we came back home feeling reenergized and ready to get started on a new chapter of our lives! This process proved to be successful for us and we are happy to know that we’ve bundled it all in a journal to share with others who are using their travels to seek direction and meaning in their life as well!
Our aspiration is to grow the BVOY & Co. brand and have other products and/or services under one umbrella. We know that as people seek ways to be a better version of themselves the process can be daunting. Our mission for the BVOY & Co. brand is “To make people feel inspired during their pursuit to living their best lives”.
